Honoring T. Denny Sanford
We are saddened to announce the passing of First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard founder Denny Sanford. Denny was 90 years old and truly lived a life of significance, inspiring a spirit of generosity and service here at PREMIER.
Denny purchased the bank in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1986. He renamed it First PREMIER Bank and expanded into the credit card sector with PREMIER Bankcard. Four decades later, PREMIER is considered one of the nation’s strongest financial organizations.
One of Denny’s famous sayings was to “Aspire to inspire before you expire.” Throughout his lifetime, he gave away more than $4 billion to initiatives that benefit children and families, health care, higher education, workforce development and the arts. His philanthropy touched millions of lives and transformed the landscape of South Dakota and beyond.
“Denny’s passion for helping people and inspiring others to do the same is unmatched. From the first day I met him, I understood how important that was to him. He often said many people live a life of success, but you should try to live a life of significance where you can make an impact on people.” - Dana Dykhouse, CEO, First PREMIER Bank
“Denny changed the landscape of giving. He could have done many things with his money, yet he reinvested it in South Dakota. Our universities are stronger today because of Denny. Our health care is stronger today because of Denny. He believed in working harder to help someone other than yourself.” - Miles Beacom, CEO, PREMIER Bankcard
